Laurel

Stephanie

First name: Cyndee
Age:22
State:TX
Country:USA
Vegetarian type(vegan or veggie):ovo-lacto
vegetarian 1.
What influenced you to become vegetarian?
We had to dissect fetal pigs in my
biology class. When I came home to
dinner I could no longer deny that
the dead corpse which had disgusted
me in biology was the same thing as
what was being served on my plate.
I decided then that I didn't want
to eat animal corpses anymore.
2. How long have you
been a vegetarian?
Since December 1997, approximately
6 and a half years.
3. Is it hard to be
a vegetarian?
The only hard parts are dealing with
haranguing from idiots and trying
to find something to eat at restaurants.
4. What books or who
gave you the inspiration of being
a vegetarian?
None
5. Which quotes that
inspired you to become a vegetarian?
None
6. How do you get
your protein everyday?
Soy products, beans, nuts, whole grains,
dairy, eggs....protein can be found
in almost anything.
7. Give a general
meal plan of what you eat each day:
-Breakfast Luna Bar/cereal/toast/fruit/yogurt
-Lunchpeanut butter and jelly sandwich/soup/bean
burrito/veggie burger/veggie sandwich
-Dinner same as lunch, or casseroles
and stir fries with pasta/rice, veggies,
and beans/meat analogue
-Snacks Luna bars/fruit/yogurt/nuts/crackers/chips
and salsa/carrot and celery sticks
with dressing
8. Why should other
people become vegetarians?
I think cutting down on animal products
and eating more vegetables would be
beneficial to most people's health.
Also, if you're concerned about animal
cruelty or the environment than becoming
vegetarian will help your cause.
9. When you go to
non-vegetarian restaurants, do you
find any difficulty ordering appropriate
meals? If so, what do you do?
Yes, I hate going to restaurants.
I'm completely shocked if they have
more than one vegetarian item on the
menu, even though they may have 25
different chicken dishes. It's also
really annoying how they insist upon
putting meat broths in vegetable soups.
I hate asking for them to make me
something special, and more than half
the time when I do ask, they don't
get it right the first time. If all
I can find is a salad, I won't be
eating at that restaurant again.
10. Do you think you
are on a well balanced diet? If not,
please explain why.
I think my diet is better than most.
I know I should probably be eating
more leafy greens, but they taste
bitter to me and I hate them.
11. What are the pros
and cons of being vegetarian?
Pros: no eating nasty corpses, helpful
to the environment, helpful to animals,
can be more healthful. Cons: People
are often threatened by your diet
and insult or ridicule you for no
reason. Eating at restaurants is often
more trouble than it's worth.
12. Any comment?
None

First name: Laurel
Age: 19
Province: New Brunswick
Country: Canada
Vegetarian type(vegan or veggie): ovo-vegetarian
1. What influenced
you to become vegetarian?
the first realisation that someone
actually had to die for my dinner.
I couldn't eat meat again after that.
2. How long have you
been a vegetarian?
about two and a half years
3. Is it hard to be
a vegetarian?
I don't find it difficult at all.
The hardest thing is to feel seperate
from everybody else, rather than the
actual food part. It's completely
worth it though.
4. What books or who
gave you the inspiration of being
a vegetarian?
Actually, the movie Apocalypse Now
was what did it for me. The scene
at the end where they slaughtered
the cow disturbed me.
5. Which quotes that
inspired you to become a vegetarian?
Don't really have any quotations..
though one of my favourites is by
Pythagoras "As long as men slaughter
animals, they will kill each other.
For he who sows the seeds of murder
and pain cannot reap love and joy."
6. How do you get
your protein everyday?
Mostly soy and peanut butter.
7. Give a general
meal plan of what you eat each day:
-Breakfast: Blueberry bagel with tofutti
cream cheese (LOVE that stuff)
-Lunch: Peanut butter and jam sandwich,
applesauce, an apple, a homemade chocolate
chip cookie, a bottle of water
-Dinner: spaghetti in Prego mushroom
sauce mixed with nutritional yeast,
water or juice
-Snacks: dried apricots, chips, mini-pitas
with garlic hummus
8. Why should other
people become vegetarians?
In an ideal world I would want everybody
to be vegetarian because they loved
animals, but I know that's not going
to happen. The environmental reasons
are compelling enough and I'd be ok
with that.
9. When you go to
non-vegetarian restaurants, do you
find any difficulty ordering appropriate
meals?
If so, what do you do?: generally
no. I usually go for pizza without
cheese or a veggie burger if they
have one. Sometimes I get a stir-fry
and ask them to hold any meat that
might be in it.
10. Do you think you
are on a well balanced diet?
If not, please explain why.: Well,
probably not. I don't pay enough attention
to getting everything that I should,
but I know that if I set my mind to
it, I could eat well and still keep
with my ethics.
11. What are the pros
and cons of being vegetarian?
Pros - guilt free. Feeling good that
you're making a difference, even a
small one. Knowing that you're being
socially responsible. Introduction
to many wonderful foods one might
not otherwise know about. Cons - Feeling
seperated from almost everyone else
in your life (this can be avoided
by joining a club or going to a veg*n-meetup,
but we don't have any of those where
I live).
12. Any comment?
After being veg for a significant
amount of time, I can say easily that
it's one of the best things I've ever
done. Any parts about it that are
negative are easily overshadowed by
the good things.

Not usually.
4. What books or who
gave you the inspiration of being

6. How do you get
your protein everyday?
Legumes, cereal, dairy, vegetables,

7. Give a general

-Breakfast : cereal with milk, herbal
tea.
-Lunch : large salad and: spinach
pie, soup, pizza, burito, veggies/rice
etc.
-Dinner : large salad and: soup, some
vegetables rice and/or noodles, pasta
-Snacks : fruit, popcorn, nachos,
popsicles, pickled chile peppers
8. Why should other
people become vegetarians?
It's very healthy, full of variety,
and pretty much free of guilt.
9. When you go to
non-vegetarian restaurants, do you
find any difficulty ordering appropriate
meals? If so, what do you do?
Not always. If I they don't have anything
vegetarian, I ask for something without
the meat. Most of the time they are
happy to help, if not, then I won't
return.
10. Do you think you
are on a well balanced diet? If not,
please explain why.
Yes, I think my diet is healthier
than a lot of my friends. I pay far
more attention to what I eat than
they do. It seems they have very few
vegetables and fruits while I have
many. This is certainly a health benefit.
11. What are the pros
and cons of being vegetarian?
Pros: Can be much healthier. You also
have the satisfaction of knowing that
no animals died for your meal. Good
Karma!
Cons: It is sometimes harder and more
expensive in restaurants. And you
get a lot of stares and comments because
of you preferences.
12. Any comment?
I get all nutrients I need without
eating meat and so could everyone
else. Not that I'm trying to influence
them

First name:Stephanie
Age:18
State:IL, USA 1.
What influenced you to become vegetarian?
I never liked the taste of meat to
begin with, I gave up all red meat
by age 8 or 10, then my sister became
a semi-vegetarian and I played around
with the idea for the next 7 years
or so, taking out chicken (the only
meat I ate) and then putting it back
in, then trying to take it out again.
Then I found an essay my sister wrote
about how we could feed everyone on
the planet if we stopped eating meat
and I decided a month or two later
to give it all up (meat and dairy).
Then when I went vegan I found all
the info on the nasty slaughterhouses
and it just reinforced it so I couldn't
go back even if I wanted to.
2. How long have you
been a vegetarian?
1 1/2 years as a vegetarian/vegan,
and about 7 years of on and off
3. Is it hard to be
a vegetarian?
Sometimes, like on vacation, but only
becasue my parents like going fancy
places that don't have garden salads
and side dishes
4. What books or who
gave you the inspiration of being
a vegetarian?
None
5. Which quotes that
inspired you to become a vegetarian?
None
6. How do you get
your protein everyday?
Lots of places- peanut butter, TVP
(sooo good), nuts, broccoli, veggie
burgers (garden burger chick'n grill
has like 13 g!)
7. Give a general
meal plan of what you eat each day:
-Breakfast- I don't wake up in time
but on the weekends oatmeal with fruit
or pancakes
-Lunch-sandwiches, toast, umm...
-Dinner- stirfry, TVP, mashed potatoes
(w/ soymilk and EB), speghetti (can't
eat it now, but I used to) brown rice
with veggies, vegtable soup with beans
or jasmine rice, falafel, veggie burgers,
'chicken', big salads, etc. I make
crepes for my family a lot (filled
with veggies and topped with a thick
sauce)
-Snacks- fruit,
(I'm still not used
to this whole wheat sensitivity I
have so some of the stuff I don't
really eat anymore but I used to)
8. Why should other
people become vegetarians?
Becasue it's healthy for them and
its healthy for the environment. I
want my kids to have available fresh
water (which we are presently using
to irrigate fields in California and
hot states so cows can munch on grass)
and I really like my heart and would
like it to keep beating for as long
as possibe. (plus the whole pesticides,
carcinogen thing too. yeah, meat sucks.)
9. When you go to
non-vegetarian restaurants, do you
find any difficulty ordering appropriate
meals? If so, what do you do?
Yes, but I deal with it. I can eat
something when I get home. Or, if
I'm on vacation, I deal with it. That's
why we have fat stores, so we can
go without food if need be. (then
I get a big breakfast IE bagels form
panera (which I also can't get anymore,
but last time I was on vacation, etc.)
10.Do you think you
are on a well balanced diet? If not,
please explain why.
Yes, more balanced than when I ate
meat and would have like three hot
dogs a day and thats it.
11. What are the pros
and cons of being vegetarian?
Pros- too many to list- I barely get
sick (which actually is kidn of a
con b/c I don't get to miss as much
school ), I feel more enrgetic, I
feel better about myself, just everything
basically
Cons- Restuarants
don't carry lots of vegan entrees,
people who just 'don't get it' but
really, those people are rare and
they are only annoying if you let
them be.
12. Any comments?
If you need any more info I just did
a 15 page paper on vegetarianism and
health so just PM with any questions
you still might have good luck on
your paper!
